SPD & AFDD Regulation Changes Recently, there have been some regulation changes for
Surge Protection Devices (SPDs) and Arc Fault Detection Devices (AFDDs).
This month’s blog at Worthy Electrical Services
looks at the changes to SPD and AFDD regulations. For more information, call us

What are SPDs? Surge Protection Devices are a requirement under the 18th
Edition of the Wiring Regulations. They are essential in protecting equipment
from damage. Every building in the UK contains electrical devices and equipment
that we use every day. However, in the event of a power surge, serious damage
can be caused. This leads to expensive repairs.
SPDs are required to be fitted where power surges may result
in the following:
Serious injury to or loss of human life
Interruption of public services and/or damage to cultural
heritage
Interruption of commercial or industrial activity
Impacts a large number of co-located individuals
For non-residential properties that do not fit any of these
categories, a risk assessment must be carried out.
What is an AFDD? Arc Fault Detection Devices are small modules fitted onto a
circuit. The electrics within the device constantly monitor the circuit and its
loads. The AFDD detects where a wire may have broken. Once it detects that
there is an Arc on the circuit, the AFDD trips the power supply to remove the
fault.
An Arc Fault Detection Device can distinguish between
working arcs and faulty ones. The AFDD regulations in the 18th
edition AMD2 specifies a number of examples where these devices are required in
order to remain compliant.
AFDD’s must be fitted at the origin of any single-phase AC
final circuits supplying socket outlets with a rated current not exceeding 32 A
in the following:
